Los Angeles

Los Angeles, Spanish for “The Angels,” is the largest city in California with an estimated population of 4,015,940. It is the second most populated city in the United States, behind New York City, and the third most populated city in North America, behind New York City and Mexico City). The city is known for its climate, professional sports teams, Hollywood entertainment industry, and ethnic diversity. LA is the seat of Los Angeles County (the most populated county in the United States) and is located in a basin in Southern California. The landscape varies from deserts to mountains as high as 10,000 feet. Los Angele’s economy produces a gross metropolitan product of $1 trillion, making it the third-largest city by GDP in the world. The 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics were both hosted in the area, and the city will host the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Like most of southern California, Los Angeles is known for its year-round sunshine and Mediterranean climate. It averages 284 days of sunshine per year, with 16 inches of precipitation mostly taking place during the winter. Los Angeles is subject to microclimates, where there are extreme temperature variations in nearby areas. Like other coastal cities, Los Angeles experiences clouds and fog during the spring, known as “May Gray” and “June Gloom.” Throughout the year, the temperature in the area will vary from around 46°F to 85°F, rarely going above 93°F or below 42°F.
